Thinking about a visit to Burry Port? Here’s everything you need to know about this charming village…

All you Need to Know About Burry Port

The lovely town of Burry Port can be found along the Loughor estuary in Carmarthenshire. Much like the surrounding towns and villages, Burry Port boasts a rich industrial heritage.

For the older inhabitants of Burry Port, the transformation from the busy industrial harbour to a holidaymaker’s playground must be nothing short of miraculous. Burry Port did not exist until the 1850’s, when the village grew up around the new harbour that was built to export the coal produced in the Gwendraeth valley.

The most notable event in Burry Port’s history took place 90 years ago. On June 18th in 1928, Amelia Earhart was attempting to become the first woman to fly the Atlantic. Unfortunately, her Fokker F7 ran out of fuel and landing in Burry Port’s harbour.

Industry is now largely confined to a few marine and engineering companies and Parsons Pickles. Burry Port has a lifeboat station, a small supermarket and a range of gift and craft shops.

After the demand for coal declined, the harbour was later redeveloped, and now offers a fantastic base for boat owners. As well as tourists, with it often referred to as the ‘gateway to the Gower Peninsula and Carmarthenshire coastline‘.

If you’re a keen angler, you will often see people fishing along the harbour walls or taking their boats out to explore.
