More of a rolling hill than what you may imagine as a mountain, Llanllwni Mountain has plenty of history spanning as far back as the pre-historic. Human activity on the mountain was predominantly more widespread during the Bronze Age and the Post-Medieval periods. Today the mountain offers splendid views of the surrounding countryside – the Preseli Hills and the Brecon Beacons can be seen on clear days from near the summit.

Exploring the area
Llanllwni Mountain (or Mynydd Llanllwni to the locals) is an excellent area for walkers and cyclists. With its vibrant heathland and panoramic views across the surrounding valleys, it’s a wonderful place to enjoy a picnic in the sunshine. It’s not much of a tourist trap either, so you can enjoy peace and quiet if that’s what you prefer! Before you get to the top, you’ll get the chance to stroll through ancient oak woodland in Brechfa Forest and along the River Cothi – a haven for all sorts of wildlife and a great location for a spot of fly fishing.
The mountain has also been recognised as a Dark Sky Discovery Site, which means you can enjoy uninterrupted views of the stunning night sky from the top (and even the car park, if you don’t fancy walking anywhere in the dark!).
You can even find evidence of the mountain’s rich history – a number of Neolithic burial mounds can be seen along the way.
Directions (Via car)
- Head for Llanybydder on the A485 from Carmarthen.
- At Llanllwni turn right off the main road at the signpost for Rhydcymerau
- Follow the road over a cattle grid and on up to Llanllwni Mountain.
- There is a small car park on the right some 400 meters up the hill past the cattle grid.
