“Lovely property, one of the nicest we’ve ever stayed in.”

Were lucky enough to sit out in the garden a couple of evenings enjoying the beautiful view. Beds very comfortable and sofa in lounge also comfy. Loved relaxing in front of the log burner. Nice walks not too far away. Only criticism would be the folder with information in, stated that the reason for no welcome pack was because of Covid 19. I don’t t have a problem with no welcome pack as we had a shopping delivery booked, but I think using Covid as a reason to not even provide a pint of milk ...

“A lovely, cosy and welcoming cottage.”

We had a brilliant week! Beds are very comfy, the kitchen really well equipped (love the cups!) and the living room was perfect to settle down in after a busy day exploring the area. The only thing to note is some of the info in the folder at the cottage wasn’t totally accurate/up to date. It said the towel rails were permanently on in the bathroom and utility room but they weren’t (and nowhere to turn them on) so it meant drying damp clothes/towels wasn’t easy and it looks as though the washing machine is different to the one in the book and it doesn’t operate as a drier as well so had to try and dry some freshly washed clothes (I didn’t actually have any intention of doing a wash while on holiday so wouldn’t have even noticed normally but the weather wasn’t very kind on a couple of days and my children were very attracted to the mud/bogs on one of our walks) The pub across the road was really friendly and the little shop/deli has some great offerings. The brownies are delicious! Parking wasn’t an issue - we drove to the cottage to unload the car and then parked on the roadside easy enough after. The pub did say we could use their car park if we struggled to park as we enquired on our first day if we were ok just to park anywhere on the roadside. All in all a gem of a place, thank you for a wonderful week.

“Bwthyn Dyfi is quite possibly the nicest property we’ve ever stayed in.”

We loved everything about it! The cottage has a luxurious feel to it (really well equipped kitchen, beautiful bathrooms, the most comfortable beds which we didn’t want to get out of!) whilst retaining and enhancing its original features - dense stone walls and beamed ceilings. The most delightful feature is the garden, sitting out with a coffee in the morning, with the most idyllic view of the River Dyfi through to snuggling up by the fire pit with a glass of wine in the evening. It is just the perfect holiday cottage.

“We adored this beautiful rose covered cottage.”

Stunning views from every window, it has a gorgeous garden to sit and relax in, listening to the babbling river, watching the birds and smelling the roses and lavender. Inside is warm, cosy and comfortable with lovely furnishings and a log burner for colder evenings. Fantastic roll top bath as well as a shower and the kitchen is well equipped with the best collection of mugs ever!!!! The pub at the top of the lane is very dog friendly but only open on Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday. When we arrived on the Saturday we went to eat there but sadly they didn't have the gluten free items on their menu for my husband who is coeliac. The cafe/shop across did have a gluten free choice and we hoped to eat there a few times but they didn't allow dogs, even at their outside eating area. So we did have to drive to eat and drink out which we hadn't planned on doing quite so much. The next town Machynlleth has a fantastic dog friendly cafe and deli, Blasau at the Royal House with a brilliant range of gluten free baked items made fresh every day. The chip shop Hennighan's also is brilliant for gluten free so we made the most of eating out in the garden back at the cottage when the weather allowed. Beautiful cottage, stunning location, no issues at all with parking but for us, we did have to drive if we wanted to eat and drink out rather than having that option within walking distance.

“A very enjoyable week.”

We didn’t realise there wasn’t a garden where children could play although we found a lovely little park about 200 yards away up the road. The entrance to the property was a small porch which hadn’t been cleaned and it was a shame that it was the first thing you saw when entering the property.

“Idyllic views of the river and mountains, background sounds of birds and sheep - a meditational environment - perfect!”

Friendly people in the tiny village - a shop / cafe with local produce a few minutes away by foot. Had a great fun evening with locals at the pub (opposite the shop) - very welcoming! The cottage itself fantastic - beautifully decorated, original beams, floorboards and stone walls - but with modern comforts: radiators, heated towel rails in the bathroom and downstairs laundry room/toilet. Heated floor in the bathroom was a great suprise! Comfy sofa to sprawl and take naps opposite the fireplace, that kept is cozy. Really good quality well equipped kitchen, with induction stove top, micro, toaster - we cooked several times a day and everything we needed to prepare proper meals was at hand. Large kitchen table was great. Outside seating gives quiet space to all - even with an outside socket to recharge phones / laptops - best office and views I ever had! Bonus: low flying jets from the Mach Loop one day was stunning.

“We had a lovely stay.”

Cottage was spotess for us - so clearly the issues are isolated/sporadic. Kitchen was very well equipped - had everything we could need and more!! Sofas, beds etc. all comfortable and shower/bath both very good (once we'd read the instructions in the guest manual on how to get hot water for the bath!). Heating good and flexible, fire lovely. Parking was OK for us - we mostly parked on the road having dropped our stuff off down the road, which is tight but manageable. Sykes instruction email didn't seem to give us the full "how to find" info which we did find in the online guest handbook the owner sent (it's a bit hard to find) The area is really lovely. Weather wasn't too good so no high mountains - but we enjoyed walking to Machynnleth on Glyndwr's Way (~12m, bus back once per day), doing the "Windmills Walk" up onto Mynydd de Cemmaes and back down via the Cambrian Way as well as doing the waymarked "Cwm Dugoed a Clywedog Path" walk from Mallwyd. The best thing though was the village - without fail everyone was welcoming and made us feel at home - the pub (Penrhos Arms) is lovely when open, and the shop/cafe (Ty Cemaes) is a real find - great for nice topups if not a full weeks shop - nice meat, good food/veg, lots of lovely local stuff. So few people on the walks - and always a conversation when we did meet someone! And the food was lovely. Would definitely recommend.

“The cottage itself has been thoughtfully renovated and is well equipped in the kitchen, however the apparent ongoing cleanliness issues are still a problem.”

Behind furniture, bedroom bin not emptied and basic items not replenished. No dishwasher tablets no kitchen towel, one cube of fire lighter and the cottage took several hours to warm up when we arrived. These easy to fix issues did dampen our enthusiasm to return to an otherwise beautiful cottage in stunning location. The simple answer is to oversee the maintenance of cottages, do not totally rely on cleaning companies.

“Stunning cottage with amazing views and had everything we needed for a weeks stay.”

Would have liked to have known in advance more about accessing the property which for myself and partner was ok, but for my mum the path to the cottage uneven, making it hard especially in the dark. The stairs in the cottage are quite steep which again for us was ok but my mum struggled. Parking is on the road and we never struggled to park, but we did drive the car down the lane when we arrived to offload and again when we left to make it easier. Overall we had a great stay, very relaxing, the views are amazing and we were fortunate enough to see the jets fly by, which are close but do not in anyway spoil your stay, they are amazing to see and not everyday, we were lucky to see them. The shop and pub are very close and everyone really friendly. The lower garden is getting slightly overgrown compared to the pictures but makes it very private. We would definitely return and certainly didn't want to leave. Would definitely recommend.

“The outlook and location is stunning, and the village has a very good shop and cafe - it’s also possible to walk some distance without a car, although the roads in this area must be some of the loveliest in Britain.”

The old cottage is old very well adapted. Not suitable perhaps for all access due to steep stairs and steps between rooms, but fine for most people. The terraced gardens are lovely and we appreciated the supplied bird food. Well equipped - only note would be that more instructions on recycling would be useful: I guessed.

“Perfect location for us to explore.”

Was an absolute joy being so close to the river and the views from the front if the cottage were just beautiful. Cottage itself was exactly as advertised. WIt was well furnished and very comfortable and cosy. Everything was working, well maintained and the kitchen was very well equipped. (Instruction book was really useful and easy to follow) Smashing cafe, a stones throw away, at the top of the road for odd supplies, coffee or breakfast. It's a total gem and we'll definitely be back. Thank you x

“A clean, tidy and very charming cottage, located on the side of a valley, that does not disappoint!”

This beautiful cottage had everything we needed, including a pretty garden which offers stunning views and is perfectly situated on the Mach Loop for some exhilarating fly pasts!! The cafe/shop just at the end of the road is a real bonus; it's well stocked, very welcoming and serves tasty breakfasts and light lunches. The property doesn't have its own parking space but we were able to unload and load the car close by, before parking up on the main road (2 minute walk away). During our stay we weren't lucky enough to get the 'first come, first served' parking space close to the cottage, but we never had a problem finding a space on the main road. We had a great stay and loved the character of the cottage. Thoroughly recommend!!

“From the moment we walked down the path and opened the door we were in love with the place.”

It was so perfect. Amazing location fantastic facilities and beautiful scenery. We had some cold and wet days but the cozy living room with fire was perfect. It was a great base to explore so much of snowdonia and the coast. The pub was lovely as was the little coffee shop which was filled with all you need. We went on some lovely walks just in the village as well exploring the river and up into the Mountains. Would love to stay again!

We thought it might be one of those listing which looks too good to be true but we were wrong! This picturesque cottage is even better in reality. It was cosy on rainy days and evenings and was the perfect base for days spent exploring. It has everything you could need or want and the owners have clearly put a huge amount of effort into maintaining it. The little touches made it so homey. “The cottage had lovely view and nice seating areas outside, exactly like the photos in the listing.”

Unfortunately the cleanliness of the cottage didn't meet our expectation. The beddings had stains and hair and just didn't feel clean. The sofa downstairs had a lot of what I can only guess was the rub fibers which suggested it had not been cleaned at all. Kitchen utensils all required a quick rinse before they can be used. When we were there, the upstair shower leaked through the ceiling to the area in front the downstair toilet which prevented us from using the downstair toilet whenever the shower was being used. We reported some of these issues to the owner and he was very responsive and helpful but sadly it was not possible to actually resolve any of these issues during our stay. Few other minor things that would have been nice to have for us. There were no logs for the fire. When we arrived late after a long drive we realised that there was no tea or coffee and that the shop nearby was closed until the morning of the our departure day. Not a big deal but would have made our stay a lot more enjoyable if some tea or coffee were provided to get us started and/or more information about what to bring/prepare were provided in the digital house manual. The cottage is beautifully decorated, would have been a lovely stay if the cleanliness was up to the standard.

I can only apologise for the problems with the shower, these were fixed as soon as possible but unfortunately it was not possible to do within the weekend of your stay. We are constantly working with the cleaners to improve the hygiene and I agree that what you found was not acceptable. I have reminded the cleaning company that they need to restock the log basket and the owner of the cleaning company has agreed that he will do regular assessments to ensure that the standards are up to what we expect. It is not recommended to leave any food (tea and coffee included in the house (due to covid) but we will take on your feedback on the manual and increase the information. Property Owner

“The cottage is in a beautiful location and had everything we needed.”

It was comfortable and well fitted out with good kitchen utensils etc and lovely outdoor seating areas. However, there were a few points which were not as expected regarding cleanliness. Firstly, the kitchen bin had not been emptied when we arrived, having what was presumably the last guests waste in it, including a pair of old slippers. Secondly the upstairs toilet had a cream egg wrapper in it, which suggests it hadn’t been cleaned at all. There are cobwebs in various places, particularly around the window in the downstairs toilet, and the drawers and cupboards in the kitchen have debris in them, along with something which looked like a broken watch strap in the bedside table drawer. The kitchen work surfaces also had various spillages of tea etc on them, which came off with a simple cleaning spray and wipe. There were also no logs for a fire or fire pit, which the listing says there will be a starter basket of them. We would have liked to use the fire pit particularly. Another point is the heating re-sets overnight. We set the bedroom heating low because we don’t like it warm, but it kept resetting to come on in the morning. This should be possible to override. Bedding etc appeared clean, and we had an otherwise lovely stay.

“Brilliant property for a Family of 4 with a dog -the community coffee shop just up the road is excellent and the pub opposite the coffee shop did a good dinner.”

Also a fan of being on the Mach Loop -we were treated to a couple of spectacular fly pasts! Excellent location for exploring Snowdon and the Corris Mine tour which is well worth a trip. We are already planning a return visit.

“I think it wonderful that we could swim in the river at the end of the garden, I saw a kingfisher twice.”

My only reservation concerning the cottage was no reading light but I find that in most cottages (over 50s find they need one!). The sitting room was small and dark but the sofas were comfortable and a wonderful size for my over tall husband. Warning, many styles are not dog friendly so this is a no go area for local walks if you have a heavy dog. Also several times we found fences where fences shouldnt have been which was frustrating. Everyone was friendly though, the scenery was beautiful and its only a 25 min drive to Cadair Idris which was magnificent.

“A beautifully presented cottage in an idyllic location on the edge of the River Dovey.”

Whatever time of year you visit, you'll be comfortable with wireless thermostats throughout, a well thought out utility room for drying wet weather gear. When the sun shines, the split level garden catches the sun perfectly. The well equipped kitchen can be supplied with the bulkier items from co-op in Machynlleth, but you'll be surprised by the stock in the lovely shop at the end of the lane, especially logs for either a cosy fireside evening in or a riverside fire pit, starry night out (Blankets also provided) so please support, they make great coffee too. In the current climate of 're-opening', The Penhros Arms Hotel (directly opposite the lane to Bwthyn Dyfi are offering a limited but nice menu for socially distanced outdoor eating, again a great location in the early evening sun. We supported several times and with the convenience of takeaway trays, were able to enjoy back at the cottage with a fine wine and setting sun. A very comfortable sleep was had and a lovely spacious bathroom complete with a superb roll-top bath. Be mindful of a 'right of access' to the last cottage to the right of Bwthyn Dyfi (as you have to access your accommodation) We met the owners and their contractors who were lovely and considerate, but guests may need extra direction to their property when the owners reopen. Thank you to Rebecca and Tony for your great communication and sharing your lovely cottage.

“What a fabulous cottage!”

Inside and outside it is very tasteful and with attention to detail, the kitchen perfectly equipped for "proper" cooking and baking, and an extra bonus is the village shop a few steps away, which has fresh bread, milk from the tap, re-fill/ zero packaging options for a lot of produce etc. Within half an hour's drive you have the widest sand beaches ever, mountains for hiking, quirky shops and much more, but we also walked just from the cottage, and spent a lot of time there as it's just so nice!

I was disappointed to discover that when it stated 'fuel covered' that only meant one basket of logs for the entire week which was misleading. The downstairs utility room smelt of urine which was unpleasant. There was no welcome pack with ideas of local walks/things to do or instructions on how to use the heating/cooker which were both a little strange to use.

Thank you very much for the feedback. We are new to this and still learning. Regarding the logs, on reviewing the listing we agree it could be misleading and have asked Sykes to correct it. To clarify, we leave a basket of logs which is sufficient for the first few evenings. Our village shop supplies logs and we’d really appreciate our guests supporting our local economy. Alternatively our local petrol stations and supermarket also provide. We apologise about the toilet in the utility room. This has now been fixed. Finally, we have been asked not to provide paper copies of a welcome brochure due to Covid restrictions. We now have an online pack that details our favourite walks, plus of course all the instructions for the cottage. A link is emailed to you before your arrival. We appreciate this is different to other years, but we are living in unprecedented times. Property Owner

Cemmaes is a lovely little village surrounded by the rolling hills of Mid Wales set in the stunning valley of the River Dyfi. With a pretty village church and a scattering of houses with lanes leading down to the river, Cemmaes is the perfect little place for a relaxing retreat. Just 10 minutes’ drive away is the small market town of Machynlleth. The streets of the town spread out from the 19th century clock tower, and offer a good mix of specialist shops, pubs and cafes, in addition to the regular street markets held every Wednesday. The town boasts two art galleries, and is home to the Museum of Modern Arts, Wales, which showcases the work of a variety of international artists, as well as staging concerts and lectures in its 400 seat auditorium. From Cemmaes it is a short drive to the coast in one direction and the town of Dolgellau in the other making it ideally placed for taking advantage of the superb walking, mountain biking, riding, beaches, fishing and rock climbing available in the area.
