“The cottage enjoys a wonderful location.”

One can go for wild walks & see unforgettable seascapes while being on the doorstep of a post office, secondhand bookshop, butcher/Green grocer, pubs, restaurants, cafes, art gallery etc all within 10 minutes walk from the front door. The cottage itself has lovely wood burning stoves, a super large country kitchen dining table & a pretty protected patio area looking on to a substantial garden. Altogether a very cosy, comfortable & practical holiday property, which we have visited regularly over many years without disappointment.

“We had a great holiday at Tyddyn Bach in Newport Pembs.”

The lovely garden is a big plus, especially, if you are lucky enough to have nice weather. The house is well appointed and well equipped. Tyddyn Bach is an old property, interesting and as with all older buildings, maintenance is key, T.Bach is a little tired in regards to fixtures and fittings and comfy furniture. We loved Newport, it is central to many tourist spots and we are returning again for Christmas.

“The cottage was a good size and quite well equipped.”

However, we found the cottage to be dark and gloomy. The kitchen, furniture and light fittings were dated and we felt that it had been many years since it had been given an update. The sofas were not supportive and needed replacing or repairing. Although the water pressure and supply of hot water was good the shower head in the main bathroom did not provide a good spray pattern and there some black mould on it which may have also been blocking the jets. The staircase was quite difficult to negotiate and would have benefited from some tread grips plus more lighting. The garden and patio area were very nice. The lack of direct parking was also an issue. We appreciate that rough, bare stonework is an attractive feature in a cottage but in this case, together with small windows, it did make the cottage dark inside.

Hello David, Thank you for giving us your feedback as it is important to us that all our guests have an enjoyable and comfortable stay. No-one had mentioned the shower or staircase previously but we have investigated and put in a new showerhead and improved lighting on the staircase. There are handrails for guests safety on the staircase. Traditional Welsh cottages, like ours, have all the charm and character as one would anticipate, however we understand this does not suite everybody. The modern extension does have French doors opening onto the garden which does give plenty of light. We do hope you will visit this beautiful part of Pembrokeshire again. Property Owner

“Tyddyn Bach is a pretty cottage and is conveniently close to the shops, restaurants and other attractions of Newport.”

Unfortunately, it was not clean when we arrived. While the floors and surfaces had been mopped and wiped, there were cobwebs and dead insects everywhere. We didn't go out of our way to find dirt - it was right in our view as we walked around the cottage. One of the cupboards in the kitchen was filled with mouldy potatoes. Our 4 year old found broken glass on the floor (admittedly, she was crawling around pretending to be a cat). Our 2 year old got soot all over her hands just from touching the outside of the wood burning stove. The kitchen cooker hood filters were greasy (and cobwebbed) and stank, and the cooker was greasy. We went in person to the office to complain, and they apologised and sent the cleaner around quickly, but they just mopped the floor again and threw out our newly bought and unopened packets of food along with the mouldy potatoes. We returned to the office to complain, and while they did offer to reimburse us, the cost of the food was negligible compared to the hassle of having to visit every restaurant in town looking for one which had a table during the busiest time while the kids cried that they were hungry. Aside from the cleanliness, the furniture and facilities in the cottage were worn and need updating. One of the sofas had collapsed springs and the other two were sofa beds that were very uncomfortable to sit on. We also found the beds uncomfortable, and while that is admittedly personal preference, it would seem other reviewers agree. We would advise parents of young children that the cottage is not ideal. In fairness, this was our mistake when selecting the cottage. While stair gates, high chair, cot and other facilities were provided, we found the step down from the kitchen to the sitting room a little dangerous for our 2 year old to negotiate, the stairs were very steep and we didn't feel comfortable letting our 4 year old climb them alone - this was made worse by the fact that the only toilet was upstairs. The shower screen in the bathroom was fixed in position, which made bathing the children quite awkward. Two of the beds in the twin rooms were pushed up against the stone walls, which may be a problem if kids accidentally scrape themselves on the stones. In conclusion, Tyddyn Bach didn't meet our expectations of cleanliness or comfort for the price, but we had a lovely stay in Newport in spite of this.

Hello Andy, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review of our cottage. Your comments have been shown to our cleaner in order to avoid a similar experience for future guests. Many guests with young children have visited the cottage and enjoyed it including our own grandchildren ages 5,3 and 2. They love the cottage and we use the child gates for the stairs and fire guards for their safety. We do make improvements every year for the benefit of our own family and guests including interior and exterior decorating, new shrubs in the garden. Also, recently a new shower head was installed in the ensuite shower and in response to your comment, a new folding shower door has been installed in the family bathroom. “Lovely old house in great village with quirky garden.”

Fantastic beaches really close by and wonderful walks - the village is a great base to explore from. Couple of wrinkles - the house rules book and the website info conflict so a couple of blips : we had to call to check if we could light a fire the cleaners arrived an hour earlier than we expected - they were lovely about it and waited an hour while we finished cleaning up and packing but it was embarrassing. Don't miss a trip to the the Iron Age Village - superb experience!

“I'm afraid I have to agree with previous guests.”

.. Cleanliness. I don't know what you are paying the cleaners but it clearly isn't enough. There were old pieces of food items and other detritus under the sofa beds in the snug. Spiders' webs everywhere. Three large Crane flies were firmly established in the shower area of the main bathroom. Comfort. The beds are too hard, both the mattresses and the pillows. The two sofa beds in the snug are not comfortable. The third sofa in there is too low! Facilities. One of the two log burners was out of commission. Had we known this in advance we would not have booked the cottage. This was one of our requirements for the kitchen area. We saw the two burners in the photos when we originally searched for this place. It meant that we only used the snug all the time as it had a log fire that worked. The kitchen/dining area was rarely used because we could never get it warm enough. The cottage itself was lovely, had character and was well-positioned for the local facilities. However, the whole experience was marred by the faults described above. And it's no good simply to respond by saying we should have contacted you, or that it's down to personal preference, or personal taste. Many people are coming back to you with the same issues. That should tell you something. You need to address these issues!

We were saddened to receive your feedback. Since becoming available to book, Tyddyn Bach has overall received positive feedback from its guests. In fairness to owners, it is important guests inform us immediately of any issues with a property, thus having the chance to put things right. In this instance, the local office would happily have carried out an inspection and, if necessary, asked the cleaner to return. The property description has only ever listed one wood burner, but we are sorry if that was not clear enough. If the double doors to the sitting room are kept open, the wood burner will heat the kitchen/dining area, too. There are instructions in the property for how to increase the heat output of the storage heaters. All beds in the property have been fitted with new mattresses. Property Owner

We are sorry to hear that you didn't find the beds or the sofas comfortable. This is very much down to personal preference. New, quality mattresses were purchased in May for all the beds at Tyddyn Bach. In our opinion, both sofas are comfortable even if one is a little low. Property Owner

“The cottage is lovely but unclean.”

The sofas were filthy and the floors only cleaned in visible areas. We were disappointed to find food under the edge of the sofa. Duvets were stained which we saw when stripping the beds

There are an abundance of walking and cycling routes in the area and along the nearby coastlines as well as the stunning Blue Lagoon, an old quarry which is now bright aqua waters; the lagoon was an active slate quarry until 1910, before being abandoned and flooded.
