“We had a very good week once again for our annual stay in Penllain.”

It was lovely to be able to light the open fire in the evening. The cottage is cosy and was always warm even without the fire in the last week of September. As always delightful surroundings and a safe garden for the dog. Many different short or long walks in the immediate area. The view over to Dinas Head is always relaxing to look at and colourful sunsets in the evening. Carolyn

It is such an idyllic location, glorious views and incredibly peaceful. The cottage itself was immaculate and homely, and we had a great time exploring the coastal paths and beaches. Newport offered all necessary amenities along with excellent pubs, cafes and restaurants. We would gladly stay here again, a magical week.

The cottage is cozy with a good mix of old and new, the beds and sofas are super comfortable. A modern and well equipped kitchen and lovely bathroom. The views of Dinas Head and the coastline are exceptional, and the fabulous sunsets a real treat. The surrounding countryside and wildlife is beautiful and we were lucky to be here in June to see the abundance of foxgloves. No doubt we will book again. “Our second year here and it’s very likely that there will be more.”

Within the hour of arriving, we felt completely relaxed in what we now consider a little bit of Welsh heaven. We were lucky with the weather and didn’t need to travel far to enjoy the facilities in this area. The gardens are a joy and the bird song was constant; the coastal views were wonderful and in particular, the clear views of Dina’s Head was a treat for us daily. “What a wonderful cottage in a spectacular location, we had a fab week with our 2 dogs and the weather was even kind to us too so able to make the most of the beautiful garden and views.”

Kitchen was very well equipped, and what a view you have doing the washing up !. Everything was clean and tidy, good quality comfy sofas to relax in with lovely blankets for those colder evenings. Beautiful lined curtains throughout. Good roomy downstairs bathroom, even had a steam free mirror and underfloor heating if you need it. It’s the little touches that just make such a difference. All the bedrooms are of good size and very handy WC and basin upstairs. Have stayed in a few Sykes cottages but this has been the best. Discovered some lovely walks at nearby Newport and Dinahs Head. Just one word of warning to dog owners, with sheep roaming free, watch out for the ticks!!

“We stayed at Penllain from 22nd April to 29th April.”

The house was in a fantastic location with breathtaking views across the sea to Dinas Head. We found the house in good order, very clean, and thank you for the bottle of wine plus the various food items found in a cupboard in the kitchen. The eighteen month girl loved watching the wild rabbits who came into the garden occasionally. Newport was a convenient and friendly village, and a useful start for walking the Pembrokeshire Coastal path. Just one thing which I feel I should report to you. We found there were a few bees in the front room which we assumed had come down the chimney and there may have been a nest of bees at the top of the chimney. The bees were harmless but you may want to check this out if other people have found the same thing happening during their stay. All in all a great holiday.

“Penllain has a lot of charm and is beautifully situated; totally private with lovely views.”

A traditional cottage that gives you a feel of where you are and lots of nice extras, lots of beautiful white towels etc. Loved the pretty main bedroom. We had a bit of an issue with the heating, just one of those thing and I am assured now it now fully repaired, so should not be a problem in the future. All in all a very nice cottage. Amy at Sykes was very helpful, so five stars to Amy!.

“Penllain is an incredibly well-appointed, comfortable and homely holiday cottage.”

Unfortunately the enjoyment of our stay was dampened by the boiler breaking down which meant no hot water or heating for the majority of our holiday. Despite the best efforts of Sykes Cottages to rectify the problem, including moving to alternative accommodation, we left early and returned home. However, these things happen occasionally, and the proprietor was generous in his offer of compensation. All in all, our experience would not preclude us from recommending Penllain to others as it was obvious the owner's family had lived in the cottage and ironed out any "run of the mill" glitches or inconveniences.

“Had a fabulous week at Penllain and thoroughly recommend it (despite the not so great weather).”

Beware of fairly low ceilings as it is an older traditional cottage but has loads of character, very nicely updated and decorated and well kept with a stunning view of the coastline in the distance from the kitchen and garden.. the lovely bathroom is downstairs but there is a toilet upstairs. Garden is small but you can walk up to the hillfort and across the hills in 10 mins or down to the village in 15-20 tho we didn't fancy the steep walk back up! Newport village has some lovely little shops and nice beach, and its easy to get to Cardigan (better shops) and Fishguard with lots of lovely beaches between. Highly recommend the National Trust beach at Mwnt, especially for sundowners as it has amazing views.

“We had a week in Penllain as a family of four in July 2023.”

The cottage is every bit as charming as the pictures show; it is as neat as a pin, thoughtfully appointed and is obviously well loved and cared for. Inside is a very well kitted out kitchen with all that you could need for creating culinary delights, a cosy lounge with a fire and really comfy sofa and chairs and even blankets to snuggle up with. The bedrooms are very comfortable, perfect for catching up on sleep and letting teens lie in! The downstairs bathroom is spot on with a good shower over the bath, steam free mirror and underfloor heating, again all appreciated by the teenagers. Outside, the garden is perfect for games and sitting in the sun. The location is fabulous, off the beaten track, very peaceful and with stunning views. The track outside leads straight up on to the top of the hills so walking from the front door is an easy option which we enjoyed. We also walked back to the cottage from Newport without getting run over... The cottage would give you the same sort of hug in winter as it does in the summer, and we will definitely be back - with our dog next time. Highly recommend it as a place to take the chance to slow down, recharge and restore oneself.

“Once again we had an excellent week staying in Penllain.”

The cottage is a perfect size for 4 or 6 people and had many of the facilities needed. The beds are comfortable and there is no noise apart from the birds singing in the morning. Surrounded by tranquility and exceptional views of Dinas Head. The sunsets are part of the evening entertainment! The garden is very safe and no danger of our dog escaping. The local area has beaches, pubs, shops and cafés and a variety of walks in easy reach of Penllain. We will be returning.

Private but within reach of shops in Newport, walks on beaches and on hills, and a delightful view of the sea as one stands at the sink in the kitchen and washes up! The property was clean and warm, with milk in the fridge to greet us when we arrived, plus a bottle of Prosecco. A place we would happily recommend for a relaxing holiday.

“The property is absolutely idyllic and in a lovely area with beautiful views, this is where the positive feedback ends.”

The property is not very clean, cobwebs on the windows, dirty carpets and sofa, scuffed walls, dead flys on surfaces these issues may be down to the cleaning staff and not the owner BUT the old fashioned interior is down to the owner, the stair carpet dates from circa 1960 and it could be made into a lovely modern cottage, instead of an old fashioned cottage, which holds no appeal. Apat from above, the main gripe for us was on 3 seperate occasions, somebody entered the cottage without our permission, when we weren't home. We thought it odd when we were told to leave the keys in the key safe when we were out.....the first occasion somebody entered the property, we knew as the doors had been left open when we had closed them AND the key safe wasn't on the numbers we had left them on, when we left the property, that occurred on 2 more occasions. We approached sykes who weren't Interested and they informed the owner who stated nobody had entered the cottage this is not true, we have no reason to lie what would be our gain? Would we stay there again NO, is it overpriced YES ....its like staying in an elderly relatives home but the difference is one has to pay......not a happy experience at all.

I am so sorry your experience at Penllain was so unhappy particularly as our family and friends have had over 25 years of very happy experiences there, as indeed have our recent guests from Sykes who have stayed there in this last year. We will certainly review the cleaning as these issues should be addressed easily though the sofa is less than a year old and I am surprised to hear it was 'dirty' . We have deliberately tried to maintain some of what you refer to as the 'old fashioned' elements of the cottage such as carpeting. We agree that the carpet style is perhaps now dated but we have only had the cottage on the rental market for a year and having put in a new bathroom and kitchen as a priority we have not yet got the means to replace the carpets. I hope the photos on the website make this clear. The kitchen and bathroom are 'hard' flooring now but we have kept the carpets in the sitting room and bedrooms as we feel those give a more homely feel than having hard wood floors throughout. I'm afraid I can offer no rational explanation for your suggestion that someone entered the cottage in your absence. The only reason we ask guests to use the key with the large wooden fob is just to reduce the chance of the keys being mislaid or lost as the keys from the safe are on a very small key fob. This is something we may also review. I can assure you Sykes did take your allegations seriously and reported them to me as soon as they were made aware of them at which point I suggested you removed the keys from the key safe and kept them in the property for the remaining duration of your stay. I certainly did not state that 'nobody had entered the cottage' but unless items were moved or removed I could not think why anyone would want to gain entry. The only other possibility is that someone attempted to break into the key safe, which would explain the change of digits, but failed to do so. It also seems odd that they replaced the keys in the safe after gaining entry if they had ill intent. I certainly did not suggest you were lying but I am not sure what else could be done, from a distance, other than involving the police. Again, I can only apologise that your holiday was spoiled by these events and we will endeavour to make it clearer to potential guests that this is an old, stone built cottage and the decor of the living rooms is, on the whole, 'traditional' rather than 'modern' Property Owner

“The cottage is beautiful, in a lovely location and has been sympathetically renovated.”

We all loved the view with a coffe in the morning and a glass of wine in the evening by the fire pit, absolutely stunning! beds and sofa comfortable, Walks and beaches in the area are wonderful. Newport town is quaint and has some lovely shops/pubs, however roads/pavements very narrow and lots of traffic which make it difficult to negotiate with children and dogs. Small issue withsome of the cleanliness, the cooker, which had not been cleaned, pumped out thick black smoke, filling the whole house and leaving a lingering smell all week. I did give it a clean, however it needs a proper clean with a proper cooker cleaner as the elements on top are caked in grime and I couldn't get it all off with just cream cleaner available. Rubbish found under sofa and thick cobwebs behind downstairs bedside cudboards and lots of food/condiments left in cudboard, a big no in the current climate. The hot tap in bathroom can not be used as it leaks badly.

The cottage was perfect - so well equipped - it had everything we could possibly want in there - if I’m being really picky I would say the single beds could have been more comfortable and given there is no internet’s access A bit more information about where to go on excursions and hidden gems ( there was a few very good guidebooks and the cottage guide was very good but given there is no internet it’s hard to check opening times and reviews etc beforehand - insider Information would have been helpful - we had a few wasted days because of this) but really couldn’t fault the cottage it was absolutely lovely

“We were very happy staying at Penllain, a comfortable obviously loved family holiday home, set in a pretty mature garden, surrounded by beautiful trees and countryside, with one or two other well screened properties dotted around.”

Built on a rise with a view of the sea and headland, with a few sheep, cows and ponies roaming wild in the area, such a novelty for us townies. This place is perfect if you are looking for a quiet retreat but only a few minutes drive from pub, shops, beaches, phone signal etc. The house is on a narrow bridleway leading to open moorland, so great walks from the door. We were blessed with good weather which helped to make our stay enjoyable but generally we would not hesitate to recommend Pellain.
