Waterfalls of Powys - an Introduction

We show you some of the best spots in Powys

Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn

Powys has an abundance of falls all over the county and we've put together a quick guide to some of the most popular to visit but if you are a serious waterfall hunter then be sure to take a look at the Caving UK website which has a brilliant list and map to help you find them all.

Pistyll Rhaeadr on Afon Disgynfa.
One of the UK's tallest drops. The falls are open all year round but there is a small charge for car parking. The tallest stage of the falls drops some 40 meters and over the three stages the falls drop a total of 73 meters. Located near Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant some 12 miles to the west of Oswestry.

Sgwd Henrhyd on Nant Llech.
Situated near Coelbren between Abercraf and Glynneath, this waterfall drops 27 meters in a single drop. Parking is at the nearby National Trust car park and there is a steep walk down to the falls.

Sgwd yr Eira on Afon Hepste.
Situated in the hills north west of Penderyn (A4059), Sgwd yr Eira is approximately a 3.8 mile walk from the nearest car park at Gwaun Hepste. Parts of the walk are steep and the return journey from the falls is mostly uphill. Not the tallest of falls at 7.5 meters but can be very dramatic after heavy rain fall.

Sgwd y Pannwr, Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn, Sgwd Clun-Gwyn on Afon Mellte.
All three of these falls are situated within walking distance of each other and are a short detour off the trail that leads to Sgwd yr Eira (above). Sgwd y Pannwr is the southernmost most falls of this group and is around 4.5 meters high.
Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn is upstream and rather than being just one fall it is a series of small falls grouped together.
Sgwd Clun-Gwyn is further upstream again and has two drops, the first being around 3 meters and the second about 6 meters over an abrupt ledge.

Sgwd Gwladus, Sgwd y Bedol, Sgwd Ddwli Isaf, Sgwd Ddwli Uchaf on Afon Nedd Fechan.
Another cluster of falls can be found on the Afon Nedd Fechan which runs past the Waterfall Centre just off the A465 at Pontneddfechan.
Sgwd Gwladus is on a small tributary (Afon Pyrddin) and is approximately 6 meters in height.
Sgwd y Bedol is some 2km up the woodland trail from the Waterfall Centre and is the fist falls along the Afon Nedd Fechan. Some 4.5 meters in height.
Sgwd Ddwli Isaf is a series of falls in a very picturesque setting. The tallest drop being 3-4 meters and the lower drop at just over a meter.
Sgwd Ddwli Uchaf is the furthest upstream of this group. Here the falls drop over a wide abrupt ledge. The drop being some 4.5 to 5 meters.
